In yet another example of television using the internet to promote new shows, SciFi Channel has created a new site dedicated to “Eureka”. The two hour pilot will also be offered for free on SciFi Pulse, SciFi’s broadband channel. This promotion might really be needed for this series.

“Eureka” is the perfectly constructed small town that is the result of a secret US government plan. The plot supposes that after WWII a town was constructed to be home for the top scientists and geniuses in America. The town is supposed to be the perfect environment for the scientists to do their work. But the town is completely secret and does not appear on any maps. The town is filled with the by-products and inventions that the town’s elite have produced over the past fifty years. “Eureka” follows how the “regular” citizens of the town deal with the strange aspects of life in town.

The main characters include U.S. Marshal Jack Carter, psychotherapist Beverly Barlowe, Jo Lupo Eureka's deputy sheriff, and the local mechanic Henry Deacon. Jack Carter is played by Colin Ferguson. Carter’s plot line is that he and his daughter crash their car in Eureka. The daughter, Zoe, is a rather annoying character. The best character in the show is probably the mysterious mechanic played by Joe Morton. Morton is a long time actor probably best known for his role in Terminator 2.

The pilot is OK but compared with SciFi’s other originals (Battlestar Galactica) “Eureka” comes off as campy and sanitized. This might be the point but it didn’t work for me. But you should check it out and make your own opinion.
