Online Favorites Dominate Golden Globes

By Sherri
Nominations are out for the 64th annual Golden Globes and the interesting thing to note in the television categories are the number of shows represented that also have a strong online presence. Most of the nominees for Best Television Series – Drama can be found online (legally) and the same goes for the Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy category.
In the drama category, “24,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Heroes,” and “Lost” can be found, along with HBO’s “Big Love.” The comedy/musical category includes such online favorites as “Desperate Housewives,” “Weeds” and “The Office.”
Just a side note, in the best actor for a drama, Michael C. Hall from “Dexter” is up against “24’s” Kiefer Sutherland, Patrick Dempsey from “Grey’s Anatomy,” and a slate of others, including Bill Paxton for “Big Love.” This is a nice score for Showtime’s “Dexter” in its debut season.
While I’m not saying their online presence made these shows so popular, what I am saying is that online viewing has come a long way in a very short time. Not too very long ago the field of shows to watch via download or streaming was very narrow (unless you liked to deal with pirated copies) and now the best of the best can all be had quickly, efficiently and on viewers’ timetables.
Who will win in the television categories when the announcements are made Jan. 15 at 8 p.m. on NBC is anyone’s guess, but it’s nice to see those of us who get a lot of our TV online are officially getting the best of the best.
Most of the shows in the running can be found legally through such vehicles as iTunes and Amazon Unbox.
